I live in the Texas Hill Country and am a technology educator. My role is to provide teachers and students with the tools they need for learning and living in the 21st century. I use this site to post interesting things I find on the web in the areas of education, technology, and my hobby of design admiration.

Social Picture Sharing

Before we get started, check out ZoomIt - a free download from Microsoft that is great for our projectors in the classroom. If you want to use it at school, install it to the D: drive of your computer to keep it and not allow Deep Freeze to get it.

Uses of these types of sites in a classroom:

  • Use the images as writing prompts (create “Fliction”)
  • Geotagging - post information about the location where the photos were taken.
  • Tag and search tagged photos for images.
  • Place visual cues of information inside pictures (see links below)
  • Virtual field trips about locations
  • Use a picture share site to make a photostream instead of the usual Power Point.
  • Students can make a visual backdrop for their own presentations
  • Use the site to search for pictures of a particular location for history or social context. Then have students choose pictures for a discussion about relevance and meaning in the images.

Photo Sharing Sites:

Flickr - http://www.flickr.com/

PhotoBucket - Similar to Flickr where you can share pictures and now videos online.

SmugMug - A more secure site for storing pictures. Annual fee but provides more security for your pictures than these other sites.

BubbleShare - don’t just upload pictures; make a slideshow of pictures to share with others. Includes the ability to add bubbles, themes, and accessories to your pictures to make them fun.

My BubbleShare

Buzznet - Used for connecting people to Pop Culture through music, video, and photo. Less of just a photo share site and more of a social network site. Oh and if you MySpace isn’t for you, try BoomJ - Social Network for the Baby Boom Generation

Scrapblog - Make a photo scrap book online to share through the web or you can pay a fee to have them print it and mail to friends and family.

VoiceThread - Think of this as Power Point but with voice. Record your voice or the voice of others on each slide in this web based Photo share system.

Slideshare.net - Similar to YouTube but you can post Power Points instead and search for Power Points as well.
